In January this year I bought a new 3hp twin cylinder compressor to power the soda/hard media blaster Bron kindly bought me for Christmas. I did the blasting on the driveway which proved to be a terrible and most unpleasant job mostly due to the weather but the dust cloud was most impressive? I've since sold the blaster it having done its job but I retained the new compressor for general workshop/garage duty.

I've since used the compressor allowing me to spray machines in cellulose but the sheer amount of noise it created drove me barking mad; the garage is beneath the bungalow so the compressor noise transmitted right through the bungalow so I had to do something?
I've now bought an Hydrovane 6 compressor; Bron and I collected it yesterday and today I've been playing with it. The Hydrovane came without any couplings other than a lever operated ball valve. I was given a quick demonstration and shown how to start and stop the Hydrovane by the seller and I was truly amazed by what I saw. The ball valve was set to closed position and the Hydrovane was switched on at the 13A socket it being a rather rare single phase model. What a tremendous difference in noise compared to the racket put out by my 3hp compressor; yes the Hydrovane makes some noise but Bron didn't even hear it running as she sat in the car? Now for the really amazing part; the seller fully opened the ball valve venting the compressor to the atmosphere with a loud hiss. Normally this would quickly drain a normal compressor receiver and have the compressor running flat out trying to catch up? Not so with this Hydrovane; with the ball valve closed at switch on pressure came up to around 120psi on the clock in about five seconds and as soon as the ball valve was fully opened the pressure dropped to 80psi and remained constant? The Hydrovane was putting out 80psi at full blast without dropping any further and will do this whilst ever it is switched on. I needed to reduce this 80psi hence I've just installed a regulator and have tried it out with my air line blow gun; this is a revelation to me and of course I'm delighted. I could have bought two brand new 3hp compressors for what I paid for this much older Hydrovane but give me the Hydrovane any day.
I've been doing a bit of research and these Hydrovane's need correct servicing with correct top quality oil and the oil filter needs to be clean. I'll give it a full service before putting it into service and I also noticed the mains lead has its outer insulation breached so I'll install a new cable but generally it appears to be in decent condition. I need to track down the correct oil.
I thought I'd share my views because I've owned and used many kinds of compressor over the last 50 years but never owned one like this Hydrovane. As I've stated previously my workshop is evolving and I'm amassing some nice kit to play with.

Hydrovane Compressor Service

I can compare performance between this Hydrovane and my twin cylinder compressor and what a tremendous difference; The twin cylinder is 3hp and is equipped with a 50L receiver; whilst using the soda blaster the air pressure dropped to a measly 30psi with the compressor running flat out to try to keep up; this Hydrovane is half power at 1.5hp and will maintain 80psi without even having a receiver and with considerably less noise; if only I had bought this Hydrovane earlier I would have kept the blaster?
